A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
