Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Fighters Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a diverse cast of heroes, and a thrilling plot featuring celestial beings, demons, and malevolent powers growing in influence within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

Episode 3 concluded with a dramatic pause and presented the initial group of adventurers who will branch out from the main group to embark on their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team features the determined fighter (portrayed by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), the cleric (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

With an extensive roster, it was obvious from the beginning that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

This explains, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the characters’ stories before splitting into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Schemers, and Explorers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.

Initially, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might seem mismatched, but the events of the third episode demonstrate why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the team knows exactly where to go next after a intense opening clash with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose demise initiated the story’s plot—manipulated the foes for his personal gain, invading the hidden lair, assaulting the character, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The antagonist then paid off his liabilities and escaped to a secure base in the remote area, beyond the city, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the companion and closest confidant, desires revenge.
  • Kattigan knows the region and cautions that it is a dangerous location.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having defied his family’s wishes to eliminate the target and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their position as prominent individuals in the powerful family could enable the party reach locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter pledged a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his salvation and will now accompany him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are sought by the rulers that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The cleric turned against the influential house and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • Teor is marked for death by the family.

This results in them little choice but to head to the remote area in quest for the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s follow-up content, we discover that the combat party will be absent the following episode, leaving the rest of the players to form the Questers and Schemers tables.

Audiences can expect finding out which characters will be assigned to which table in the season’s last Overture episode, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
