EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
