Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
