An underground economy for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on communication apps, based on new investigations.
Experimental Treatment Acquiring Traction Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Viewers are encouraged to message these accounts directly for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.
Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About Retatrutide
This medication is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Express Worries
Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is worrisome and could lead to individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.
Some experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing cost of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some influencers try to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer laws, risking fines, prosecution or imprisonment.
Service Response and Content Elimination
According to TikTok, the platform has taken down violative content and banned associated keywords and query recommendations. The organization stated it was dedicated to keeping the platform safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Online Trading Operations
Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of members, populated with images of slimming results, positive reviews and detailed guides for mixing or administering at residence.
After moments of joining one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.
Product Details and Pricing
Within these groups, messages display black plastic packages with postal service labels, claiming to include new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Security Actions
A representative for the messaging service stated it regularly monitored dangerous content on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“People are injecting substances they can’t verify. Even if the research behind this drug is sound, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to recent cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she explained.
Her team has previously encountered patients harmed by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
